Free Past Tense Worksheets
English Tenses can be difficult for all language learners. Whether learning english as a native speaker or as a second language learner it can be tricky to learn the differences between tense rules. We have created these past tense worksheets to help both learn and revise both the past simple and the past perfect tense.
Simple Past tense is an English students first real exploration of English tense grammar. It enables them to start telling stories, and reading with greater understanding and fluency. Most early readers will introduce past tense very early. The earlier students become familiar with it there quicker their comprehension will improve.
Simple Past tense Worksheets
There are two forms of simple past tense, these are regular and irregular these Simple past tense worksheets are aimed to cover both forms. In both isolation and them together to help students practice post styles in tandem.
They can be used as either stand alone activities or as a teacher / student led activity. I have used these in my classes. I also have dedicated Regular Past tense worksheets which are linked at the bottom of this page as well. ( so as not to confuse)
Included here are four simple past tense worksheets which cover regular and irregular forms. They are scaffolded so you can give appropriate levelled work to you students as you need.
What is Simple Past Tense?
The simple past tense form of a verb is used to describe an action that happened in the past. That point in time may or may not be known to the reader, unless quantified with an adverb or time. The two forms of simple past tense are: Regular which has teachable rules and irregular which does not.

Included here are two simple past tense worksheets and a handout for students with the rules of the Ed Endings that can be printed and given to students. This gives them the material needed to complete on their own, and to help them take their own time to process the rules
I actually enjoy teaching this subject, and run it as an ongoing quiz or activity through out the year, where students have to pick three past tense verbs from a bag and then so the following.
The word says washed
the ED Sound says ”t”
This is because the final sound of wash is ”sh’‘
If they could do that three times then they would win a cool eraser, a Toys R’US jumping bean or similar priced toy that a teacher can afford! It worked really really well! .

Past Perfect Tense Worksheets.
These past perfect tense worksheets are for free download. We have many other tense worksheets on the site, these are designed and created to fit into most grade 6 English textbooks and to act as supplementary revision and teaching assistance.
This tense covers actions that occured in the past. We use the past perfect for the earlier action. There are some differences between how regular and irregular verbs are presented which is explained in full in the worksheets and download above.

What is the Simple Present Tense?
This form of the present is used to indicate that an action occurred in the past, is happening now, or will occur in the future. It is commonly used when talking about a scheduled event. Examples include a train leaving every day at 8 am, a meeting at 10 am, or a holiday. It is not possible to use a different tense in all cases.
There are two types of tense: the simple present and the simple future. Simple present refers to actions that happen right now, and the future tense refers to actions that will occur in the future. It is also sometimes called the present indefinite. You can form simple present verbs by adding -s, -es, or -z to a verb. Here are some examples of how to use simple present verbs:

Conclusion
Past tense is often the first tense introduced along with present tense to students. Once they move on from I am, he /she/it is etc they are likely to be taught how to put those into the past tense. These simple past tense worksheets are great both for teaching and consolidation exercises.
