I have been using a version of this for years as a warmer or an ending of the lesson, it fits perfectly for a ten minute activity so help students put together phonetic sounds into simple CVC words. The one i was using was starting to look a little dated so i decided to make my own version.
This is a whole class activity that can be done in groups or pairs. I love doing this as its a real chance for students to engage with their work and for the teacher to target help where it is needed. A self directed learning win!!

This is great for self directed learning allowing the teacher to target instruction and monitor the whole class as they are engaged in an activity. I have changed some of the words to make them a little easier as i work in an ESL environment, but i have left some more difficult ones in as well. If you want to change it there is a link at the bottom to the editable version.
A great little game for ESL, Kindergarten and Primary students. It follows a simplified version of the popular card game UNO, and so students are likely to be familiar with the rules and game-play. I will put the rules below…

This is an awesome self directed learning activity. Just split your class into groups of 2-4 and give them a counter and a dice. They will play this game for ages and you can monitor their progress as they are all engaged in the lesson.
I love teaching these in my classrooms, it really adds understanding and comprehension to even beginning and young learners of English. The ability to cut and put a word together is a really important skills for English learners and i hope these help you achieve this.
Not every lesson needs a teacher at the front all the time. If you want to try a little self directed learning then this is a simple but fun and colourful set of board games that helps students sound out and blend CVC and onset and rhyme words and sounds. Easy to print and fully editable so you can change it anyway you like. Just credit and link me if you link it in your website and lead people here
