With growing numbers of cocky students now believing that they needn’t listen to teachers as they claim to be able to ask ChatGPT anything they need, it’s understandable why some educators would think this way.

ChatGPT or AI will not replace teachers. While AI technologies can assist in certain tasks, teachers possess essential qualities like human connection, personalized instruction, critical thinking development, social-emotional learning, practical application, adaptability, and ethical guidance that AI lacks.

The main issue that education authorities point to is that ChatGPT works by essentially compiling grammatically accurate content based on its predictions on what should come next, and what is connected to the initial prompt.

It is unable to think anywhere near as deeply as a human teacher can, nor can it properly grasp nuance or context. These are things that we need teachers to show us.

Why is ChatGPT Not Yet a Threat to Teachers?

Whether it can replace teachers or not, some educators still perceive ChatGPT as a threat and thus are quite hostile towards it, and hostile to the idea of their students using it in their studies.

The fact is that ChatGPT really poses no threat at all to teachers. In fact, it can be quite a good ally in the modern classroom.

Accuracy of Information

Many have already pointed out that ChatGPT is far from perfect when it comes to generating accurate and meaningful information. Actually, it has been shown many times already that content generated by ChatGPT for educational circles is prone to all kinds of errors.

The clue to this can actually be found in the platform’s name “ChatGPT.” The ‘GPT’ part stands for ‘generative pre-trained transformer’, which indicates that the tool is for generating grammatically sound bodies of text based on what it has already been taught, rather than any kind of original ideas or carefully nuanced thought.

This reinforces our previously mentioned idea that ChatGPT in its current form is really just an evolved version of an encyclopedia. It is truly amazing in its own way, but it is far from a teacher substitute.

The reality is that if ChatGPT could replace teachers now, then so could Wikipedia. At least Wikipedia has an army of volunteer fact checkers and correctors to keep its content accurate, not to mention exhaustive references.

Tools to Prevent Cheating

Almost as soon as the potential for using ChatGPT for academic cheating was seen, companies set to work to try and counter it. Just as the practice of purchasing essays online or plagiarizing content for academic purposes were both detected and shut down, so too can we find those who try to use ChatGPT for such ends.

One such example is Google Docs, which contains a feature that allows users to analyze patterns and statistics in a text to guess with some accuracy whether it was written organically or AI generated.

Other platforms such as gltr.io also help, GLTR stands for Giant Language Model Test Room. This tool uses the same principles that ChatGPT uses to generate text, but as a way to detect generated content.

It uses its pre-programmed understanding of human-written content, AI-generated content and the differences to guess with accuracy whether or not words in a text were written or generated.

An Ally in the Classroom

Beyond its own limitations and the software available to detect wrongdoing, ChatGPT can actually be an invaluable tool in the teacher’s toolbox.

For instance, teachers can use the tool themselves to get writing prompts, lesson plan ideas, or to generate age- or level-appropriate reading content.

Being able to instantly generate reading content tailored to a single student would be an incredibly empowering thing for an educator with mixed-ability students in their classroom. It can make educational differentiation a reachable reality.

Teachers can also encourage students to use ChatGPT to generate content that is then used as a starting point in lessons.

Students can take raw AI-generated content and study it more closely to see for themselves the limitations of their new tool. They can also reflect on how to make the content better, how to add more depth to the analysis, and more.

One more area that teachers have explored the effectiveness of ChatGPT is for grading student assignments.

Most current educational software can help teachers quickly mark any tests, quizzes and assignments that have fixed answers, but it’s unable to effectively mark essay questions, other than perhaps checking for spelling and grammar issues. ChatGPT, on the other hand, could use more intricate standards to analyze the quality of student content.

Some have strongly objected to such use, however, claiming that it will simply be used to reinforce problematic biases that are holding some students back. Whether or not this can be ironed out through proper study and regulation remains to be seen.

Will ChatGPT Be Able to Replace Teachers in Future?

This is a tough question to answer because right now it’s impossible for us to see how fast or how far the technology can advance. Right now it’s a much more advanced form of encyclopedia that helps us find and generate the information we want much faster and more precisely.

It can also be used by teachers to generate useful reading content, exercises, and other content to suit a topic or grade level.

However, the fundamental and most critical qualities of teachers cannot be emulated by ChatGPT or any other current AI. This software cannot show empathy or sympathy, nor can it offer nuanced and layered insight into the complexities of educational content.

ChatGPT doesn’t really know what it’s talking about when it generates content. It merely reacts to our own input and tries to generate what it believes that we need. That’s not anything like on the level of any teacher working anywhere in the world today.
