  • Sale! y as a vowel worksheets

Y as a Vowel 3 worksheet bundle – Fully Editable

    $1.00

This is the fully editable version for you to put school name, or change the format. By purchasing it you ensure the website can be maintained and we thank you for that!

The letter ”y” can be both a consonant and a vowel. There are some rules we can teach our students to help them grasp the concept. Of course, this being English these rules are mostly true and there are exceptions to this as well.

As mentioned ”y” can be a consonant and a vowel. The ”y” usually makes the consonant sound when it is a the beginning of the word. Examples are words like yellow, yacht, yes, or you.

Just to be extra confusing the letter ”y’‘ has more than one vowel sound as well as the consonant sound at the beginning. There are some rules you can use to explain to your students. If the ”y” is at the end of the word, and it is a one syllable word (I will put syllable lessons for young learners on my site as well) like dry, try, buy, why then the ”y” will make the sound of a long i.

If the word has the ”y” at the end but it has two or more syllables then the sound of ”y” is the long e sound. Word examples include candy, actually, fundamentally, tiny, wavy and many many more.

To teach this i have some worksheets and word sorting activities you can check out and i will link to them at the bottom, but also if you need stories and some online games or activities I have found some on the StarFall website. This is a Y as Long e game you can check out.

The worksheets and sorting activities can help form part of a full phonics lesson if you want to teach this. They can be downloaded at the bottom, and if you want to add or edit it i will leave the PowerPoint premium version there as well.

    $0.00

These are the free versions, if you need editable ones then please consider supporting the website. They are here in the store for the price of a coffee!

I have made six of these four in a row games. Each PowerPoint includes the template for the game, the counters and some teachers notes.

They are a real win in classrooms and I love using them with my students! Great for student centred learning, and as they are different levels, great for differentiation in the classroom as well.

The games cover the following phonics

single sounds ( including some outside of the 26 sounds of the alphabet)

Onset and rime ( with different gameplay)

    CVC words

SH, WH, TH and CH words which are often CCVC or CVCC.

    Blends

Magic E words with the CVC word highlighted as well.

This will also be part of a reading activity pack i am putting together, so if it is useful please look out for this as well!

The games and playing styles are similar but not identical. I have used these in class and they are a great way to demonstrate group work and learning stations approach.

You will needs some dice, or a way for them to roll up to 6 if you play this way otherwise everything you need is there.

Printing it on A3 would be better for them to put on their desks.

All six games included and if any questions please ask!

    $0.00

This is the free version if you need or want to edit them please consider the editable ones in the store as well. It all goes to help support the website :)

I love teaching these in my classrooms, it really adds understanding and comprehension to even beginning and young learners of English. The ability to cut and put a word together is a really important skills for English learners and i hope these help you achieve this.

I have made a video below that introduces the worksheets to save you time before you download.

I teach it initially by using the clap method, where students clap out the chunks of the word, and also introduce the open mouth method (where your month opens for each syllable.

Once they have a good grasp of that i also introduce how we make a syllable, the vowel sounds of the word for the basis, and ask them to try to find the syllables in words. This requires students knowing what vowel sounds are first, but i have resources on this as well. It is not always the easiest way to teach it which is why i leave it till they have fully understood the idea of what a syllable is. I often find that they will count the vowels, which is definite progress but doesn’t always work ( it doe sometimes which can make it even more confusing for the students) I have tried to include words that have vowel digraphs in them in these worksheets so that you have words to explain how this method works.

I have also tried to include words that incorporate some of the other skills i have written about recently as well, such as diphthongs and the letter Y sounds.

These four worksheets are differentiated for different level of learners. so if you have mixed ability classrooms then these should be of use.
