Sight words are so important in English. They give students some of the most common words and enable them to start to communicate. Many sight words are also high frequency / common words and although they do not follow, at least always follow, phonics or other English spelling rules they are still very important to learn. Especially during the formative years of English instruction.
The irony is that as education moves away from the repeat after me, rote learning style of teaching languages it still has a place in certain aspects of English . One of those aspects is Sight words.

What Are Sight Words?

Sight words are highly frequent common words in English that do not follow Phonetic or spelling conventions that the majority of English words do. They are often used more frequently and have to be learned by sight, hence their name: Sight words.
