First, just so we are all coming from the same place we have a little on what gerunds are and why they are important below followed by the gerund worksheets printables.
What Are Gerunds
Gerunds are a type of verb, but they behave very differently than other verbs. Gerunds always end in -ing, and they are always used as nouns. This means that they can be the subject or object of a sentence, just like any other noun. They are very often used with the infinitive.
Here are some examples of gerunds in action:
Gerund | Explanation |
I like swimming in the ocean. | In this sentence, swimming is the gerund and it is the subject of the sentence. |
She hates getting up early. | In this sentence, getting up is the gerund and it is the object of the verb hates. |
I can’t stand running in the heat. | In this sentence, running is the gerund and it is the object of the verb can’t stand. |
There are a few special cases where gerunds can be used differently than described above. For example, sometimes we use a gerund after a preposition. In these cases, the gerund is acting as an adverb.
