Suffixes are so important in English. Not only do their uses change, often 180 degrees, the meaning of their root word, they also have the potential to greatly expand students vocabulary. We have created these sets of FREE suffix worksheets for use in homes and classrooms to help you both teach, and for students to practice prefixes and their uses.
Suffixes and Prefixes are a more advanced English Language skill, and although earlier years will be introduced to them through general English and reading lessons, we advise that formal teaching of them should be delayed till students have more vocabulary and confidence.
We have made a prefix and suffix poster of the most commonly used prefixes and suffixes in English for you to access. It is useful to either make smaller and give to students for reference or to use as a poster on the wall. This can be downloaded from here in a few days.
Suffix Worksheets: Set of 3
In this set of Free Suffix worksheets (downloadable from the link below) we emphasize both the Suffix and the root word to show how they relate to each other. We have also included a small and short description of the purpose of the suffix under each table to give an idea of how it can be used.
Students have to identify the word from the cloud and which suffix it would use. Most of these will only suit on suffix, however there are some that may fit both. If students spot this then you can reward them with extra points!
These Prefix worksheets are designed to help students practice and become familiar with the most common as as well as rarer prefixes in both a fun and effective way.
What Are Suffixes?
A Suffix is a part of a word that usually indicates or adds onto the meaning of the word. This mostly applies to nouns and adjectives but they are used on verbs as well.
Suffixes are things like -ion and -er. We usually suffix words with possessive, -ly and sometimes with less commonly used things like -ness (noun).
There are over 40 English Suffixes although some are much more commonly used.
In these Free Suffix worksheets we have chosen the 16 most common suffixes to ensure students are more likely to come across them while reading and studying English.
We are in the process of writing articles on both suffixes and prefixes which will be linking to here when complete.
