Prefixes are so important in English. Not only do their uses change, often 180 degrees, the meaning of their root word, they also have the potential to greatly expand students vocabulary. We have created these sets of FREE Prefix worksheets for use in homes and classrooms to help you both teach, and for students to practice prefixes and their uses.
Prefixes are a more advanced skill, and although earlier years will be introduced to them through general English and reading lessons, unless teachers are very certain that their students of a level to be able to comprehend how these change the meaning of root words, they shouldn’t be addressed till later.
We have made a prefix and suffix poster of the most commonly used prefixes and suffixes in English for you to access. It is useful to either make smaller and give to students for reference or to use as a poster on the wall. This can be downloaded from here in a few days.
Prefix Worksheets: Set Of 3
In this set of Prefix worksheets (downloadable from the link below) we emphasize both the prefix and the root word to show how they relate to each other. We have also included a small and short description of the purpose of the prefix under each table to give an idea of how it can be used.
These Prefix worksheets are designed to help students practice and become familiar with the most common as as well as rarer prefixes in both a fun and effective way.
What are prefixes?
A prefix is a word that is attached to the beginning of another word, usually to change its meaning.
Prefixes are used in many languages, and they serve different purposes depending on the language. In English words, prefixes can be used for a number of purposes, including to show ownership or create new words from existing ones and to negate the root word and show opposition.
We are in the process of writing articles on both suffixes and prefixes which will be linking to here when complete.
You can download the prefix worksheets from the links below and above.
