Modal verbs are a very common, but often neglected aspect of English grammar. They are often only introduced at a perfunctory level. We have a selection of practice FREE Modal verb worksheets here, to help students learn and practice Modal Verbs

We have designed these for Grade 3 but of course they can be used by all ages and abilities who need to learn about modal verbs. We hope they are useful and encourage you to check out the hundreds of other resources we have on the site as well.

What are Modal Verbs?

Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verb that indicate modality. In other words, they show the possibility, ability, or likelihood of something happening.

The most common modal verbs include can, could, may, might, must, ought to, shall, should, and will. These verbs are used with regular verbs to express ideas such as doubt or certainty.

For example:

“I can go to the store.” Here, the speaker is indicating that they have the ability to go to the store.

Alternatively: “I might go to the store.” In this instance, the speaker is expressing doubt about whether or not they will actually go to the store.

Modal verbs are an important part of English grammar and can be a tricky concept and the worksheets below will hopefully help you teach and your students and children learn more about them.
