As a general rule guided reading focusses more on reading level than age of students, however there are certain phonics and decoding skills that students require before being able to tackle a guided reading leveled book.
I love doing this activity, it can be totally self directed by the students and they really practice reading and comprehension skills from this. It is a whole class activity that can be done in groups, pairs or as an individual.

This is a whole class activity that can be done in groups or pairs.
Students are given a board and the Ocean animals description and have to match the description to the Ocean animals picture and glue it to the board
They go horizontal across the top and the bottom and vertically along the sides.
When you ( or the students) cut out the dominos make sure there is a picture AND a description on the domino ( dominos have two sides)
Make sure the students know how to glue them as sometimes they will stick them all at the top.
We also have a rubric to show you how it fits together.
You should print the dominoes on a4 paper and the board to stick on a3!!!

Metacognition and evaluating skills can be taught using many traditional classroom activities, mill drills, idea boards, Why, What, Where and time capsule activities are all relatively easily adapted to enable teachers to teach and practice meta cognition and evaluating skills with their students.
A kindergartner should be at a reading level between 1 and 6. Higher reading levels indicate that they’re near the top of the range,
A first grader should be at a reading level between 3 to 12. Higher reading levels indicate that they’re near the top of their class, but there’s always room for growth.
Pre reading skills are defined as a range of skills that children must develop before they can start to read fluently and accurately. They include developing competency in the following skills: Phonological awareness, oral language development, narration, text awareness, letter knowledge and awareness and print motivation.
