Flip Phonics has been designed by English teachers to help all students of English practice phonics and phonetic skills in a fun and engaging way, both in and out of the classroom.

What is Flip Phonics?

Is is a card game designed for use in classrooms, homes and even the back of a car on those long journeys. There are 50 cards with 3 tasks or challenges on each card. These are split into speaking, reading, rhyming, spelling and cutting ( segmenting sounds and words) tasks. These tasks have been split into 3 levels of difficultly, green, amber and red with red being for more advanced students.

Students simply deal 12 cards face down in a grid 4 by 3 cards. ( we have a full instructions page here) and players take a turn to flip over and try to do one of the tasks on the card, they can choose which level themselves or a teacher or parent can choose which level they play at. If they get it correct they keep the card, if incorrect they have to place the card back and do a challenge card. which are kept to one side. The winner is the one with the most cards at the end of the game.

We have some examples of the cards below and the different topics. There is also a video introduction on how to play the game, and some of the ideas for how they can be used in the classroom. These are short ( we know how busy teachers and parents can be) but are a good taster that we hope helps.

The Fun Phonics Cards have 5XXX cards included and four topics, which are colour coded as are the levels of questions. We have ”Say it”, ”Count it”, ”Read It” and ”Rhyme / Spell it” and of course three levels, green, amber and red to offer some different to different levels of English ability. Read it cards have a more traditional and fun take on reading and aim to help bring a little fun fluency to our students. Green has a either a simple sentence with CVC words, or it has three CVC words with different vowels to help students hear the difference between these often confused sounds. Amber has a mix of tongue twisters and blends and red has more traditional tongue twisters.

Say it cards are designed to get students reading and speaking. At the green level saying single phonetic sounds, the amber level moves on to consonant blends and digraphs, and the red level moves on to two and three syllable words and long vowel spellings. There is some over lap on these to allows students to progress with their phonics skill education. We have included picture clues to help on certain questions as well!

Rhyme it and Spell it mix these two important skills. there are 5 of each in this section, again with the three levels of difficulty. Green has rhyming simple words or recognizing the correct spelling. Amber asks students to find or rhyme a word with more difficult vowel spellings and red introduces magic E and either two syllable or ”y” as a vowel words.

Count it cards are designed to teach the skill of cutting or deconstructing words to develop word attack skills. Green covers mostly CVC words (consonant- vowel-consonant) and how many sounds. Amber covers a mixture of two or three syllable words, blends and digraphs . Red asks students to spot which has a certain number of syllables and to count how man vowels in certain words ( to help with teaching syllables)

Challenge cards are our favourite. We have created 10 cards, with 2 challenges on each card one mental and one physical. These are used if a student can not answer or answers incorrectly a Flip Phonics question. They are not a punishment of course and are just to be used for fun. These tasks can range from doing the floss (yeah we know this may not age well – but it’s fun!) to singing Happy Birthday like a sheep.
